At District Dogs, we believe in investing in the future by empowering today’s youth. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our partnership with the Marion Barry Youth Leadership Institute (MBYLI) for our summer internship program. This collaboration reflects our commitment to fostering leadership and self-development among young people in the District of Columbia.
The Marion Barry Youth Leadership Institute, renamed in honor of the late Councilmember and former Mayor Marion S. Barry, Jr., has been a cornerstone of youth leadership training since its inception in 1979. MBYLI’s comprehensive, year-round program trains youth aged 14-18 in leadership concepts through practical, hands-on experiences. Each year, 150 youth participate in the year-round program, while an additional 350 youth join the Summer Training Program, making a significant impact on the lives of thousands of DC youth.
Our summer internship program at District Dogs aligns with MBYLI’s mission to develop leaders for the 21st century. Interns will gain invaluable experience working in a dynamic environment, learning essential skills that will prepare them for future success. Our program offers a unique blend of professional development, community engagement, and real-world applications, ensuring that interns leave with a robust set of skills and experiences.
Connie Platter, our Operations Manager, shares her thoughts on the program:
“The Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program is the epitome of community. It’s not just a summer job; it’s building connections, educating, and providing experiences. We are so happy to be a part of it. Tiana is a great example, and watching her flourish in her grooming career is so inspiring!”
Perfecto Melgar, our General Manager at District Dogs Shaw, adds:
“I really enjoy sharing our knowledge and experiences with the interns. It’s rewarding to see them learn and grow in this field! Hopefully they can be inspired to work with animals in the future.”
Program Highlights:
• MBYLI Youth Government: Interns will participate in mock government activities, enhancing their understanding of civic responsibilities and governance.
• Global Education Program: Exposure to global issues and cultural exchange opportunities to broaden their perspectives.
• Residential Training & Retreats: Overnight training sessions on local college campuses and campsites to foster team-building and personal growth.
• Community Service: Engaging in community service projects to instill a sense of civic duty and social responsibility.
• Public Speaking & Communication: Hosting public speaking competitions and forums with local officials to develop confidence and communication skills.
We are proud to support the next generation of leaders through this impactful partnership with MBYLI. By providing a nurturing and challenging environment, we aim to help our interns grow both personally and professionally.
Stay tuned for more updates and stories from our summer internship program. Together, we’re building a brighter future, one leader at a time.
