Exploring the benefits of dog daycare: why it might be your pup’s perfect fit!

We all know the feeling: you’re ready to leave for work and, as you grab your keys and start for the door, you catch your dog’s gaze.  Those sweet, big eyes make it so hard to leave and, if we could, we’d all rather spend the day at home with our furry friends, making sure they get the love, play, and exercise they want and need.  Helping you give your dog attention and expert care is why District Dogs was founded and we’re so thrilled to be opening our daycare and boarding facility, adding one more dimension to our array of services for you and your pup!

Dog daycare has long been a popular recommendation of trainers and vets to help keep dogs active, socialized, and entertained.  Read on to discover a few key benefits of dog daycare and to learn more about whether our newest service might be the right choice for your canine companion.

Benefits of Dog Daycare

  1. Exercise – This is perhaps the biggest reason that many people utilize daycare and nearly every owner who’s tried it will tell you how tired and happy their pup is after a day of fun with other dogs.  Daycare allows your dog to experience vigorous play and this can be especially helpful for younger dogs and high energy breeds.  Worried that your pup might overdo it?  District Dogs utilizes occasional cool-down periods to keep your pup from over-exerting herself.
  1. Curbing Destructive Behaviors – Many dogs display destructive behaviors when left alone and, while you can leave toys out, it’s hard to prevent her from deciding that your shoes or the couch might be more fun to chew.  At daycare your pup has access to toys and our staff is there to make sure her attention is focused in the right place.  Even better?  Your tuckered-out pup will be less likely to exhibit destructive tendencies when you get home later that night.
  1. Socialization – We all know it’s important to socialize our dogs and ensure that they spend time learning how to interact with their own kind.  Daycare is a great way to give your pup regular exposure to other canines and it can help her learn how to play and interact the right way by spending time with pre-screened dogs.  Why is that so important?  At the dog park you don’t always know the temperament, training, or background of the dogs present and this can create unexpected conflicts.  District Dogs evaluates all applicants for daycare to be sure they’ll play nicely with the rest of the pack.  We also offer two different play areas, one for large dogs and one for small dogs — you wouldn’t expect a Yorkie to feel comfortable in a room full of Great Danes and neither do we!

Is Daycare Right for Your Dog?

As wonderful as daycare is, it isn’t for every dog.  Dogs who are easily overwhelmed, who are prone to anxiety, or who can exhibit resource-guarding and territorial behaviors might not enjoy the daycare experience.  Fortunately, District Dogs also offers dog-walking services to make sure your pup gets the extra attention and exercise she needs, all from the comfort of her own home.  The application process for our daycare includes a complimentary two-hour play period, during which our staff will watch your dog play and interact with others.  This evaluation allows us to watch your pup for signs of stress, fear, or aggression.  If daycare isn’t the best option for your dog, we can help you decide if regular walks or a mix of daycare and walks might work better.
