Emergency relief efforts are part of new broader partnership between the two organizations

to support successful adoption and placements

Washington, D.C. – District Dogs, the premier dog daycare and grooming service in the Washington region, and Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, a leading local nonprofit dog and cat rescue organization, are joining together to house and support several dozen dogs and cats left homeless by the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.

The catastrophic flooding in parts of North Carolina and several other southern states, has left countless animals homeless in addition to the tragic toll on human life and communities. Homeward Trails is working with on-site animal rescue organizations to transport animals to the D.C. region while District Dogs is providing additional shelter capacity to Homeward Trails as it deals with the influx of animals in need. In the past 36 hours, a total of 80 animals, 25 dogs and 59 cats, have been brought to safe shelter locally.

This effort is a product of a new partnership between the two organizations to improve the fostering and adoption experience for both pets and families in the region.

As part of this partnership, District Dogs will provide boarding, daycare, and grooming services to dogs under the care of Homeward Trails and provide foster families access to high-quality care at discounted rates. This initiative aims to support foster families by relieving some of the challenges that come with caring for rescue animals, ensuring that dogs are well-groomed, exercised, and socialized, which increases their chances of finding a forever home.

The partnership reflects the shared goal of both organizations to ensure that every dog has the opportunity to find a loving home while receiving the best possible care in the meantime.

“Partnering with Homeward Trails allows us to contribute to a cause that’s very close to our hearts,” said Tina Leone, CEO of District Dogs. “We’re committed to making a positive impact in our community and helping rescue dogs get the care they deserve while they wait for their forever homes is a natural extension of our mission.”

“We are incredibly excited about this partnership with District Dogs,” said Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails. “As shelters across the country are filled to capacity, having safe, healthy space for our rescued animals to thrive while awaiting adoption is truly lifesaving.”

Together, District Dogs and Homeward Trails are working toward a future where every dog in the D.C. area has the opportunity to find a permanent, loving home. This partnership exemplifies the power of community collaboration in making a meaningful difference for animals and the families that care for them.
